The Central Truth
Good Morning! Thanks for dropping in. While I am limiting my exposure to media these days, for my mental and physical health, I was really delighted to read about President Biden’s awarding deals of honor in several categories. While I loved the men honored, Bono, Chef Andres and more…I knew about them and they are often in the limelight…and rightfully so. However, while I knew some of the women, many have not been a visible over the years. It was heartening to see them honored, along with their deserving male counterparts…who still outnumbered them by the way.
The Presidential Citizens Medal is one of the nation’s highest civilian honors. President Biden award 20, and seven of them were honoring women.
“Together,” Mr. Biden said of the recipients, “you embody — and I mean this from the bottom of my heart — the central truth: We’re a great nation because we’re a good people.”
Liz Chaney “Throughout two decades in public service, including as a congresswoman for Wyoming and vice chair of the committee on the Jan. 6 attack, Liz Cheney has raised her voice — and reached across the aisle — to defend our nation and the ideals we stand for: Freedom. Dignity. And decency,” the White House said in a statement.
Carolyn McCarthy Democrat and former representative who served New York for 18 years. Ms. McCarthy advocated stricter gun safety laws after her husband was killed and her son gravely injured in a mass shooting.
Mary L. Bonauto a prominent gay rights advocate who argued before the Supreme Court in Obergefell v. Hodges, the 2015 case in which the justices ruled to establish a right to same-sex marriage.
Eleanor Smeal an advocate for women’s rights. The White House credited her with helping to pass the 1994 Violence Against Women Act, a legislative achievement from Mr. Biden’s days in the Senate that he has called “one of the most important laws passed by Congress in the last 30 years.”
Nancy Landon Kassebaum Republican and former senator from Kansas. The White House noted that she had “reached across the aisle to do what she believed was right” on reproductive rights and health care reform.
Daine Carlson Evans Army nurse who served during the Vietnam War and founded the Vietnam Women’s Memorial Foundation.
Paula S. Wallace president and co-founder of the Savannah College of Art and Design.
President Biden named nineteen recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom which is the Nation’s highest civilian honor, presented to individuals who have made exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private endeavors.
President Biden believes great leaders keep the faith, give everyone a fair shot, and put decency above all else. These nineteen individuals are great leaders who have made America and the world a better place. They are great leaders because they are good people who have made extraordinary contributions to their country and the world.
Dr. Jane Goodall world-renowned ethologist and conservationist whose research transformed our understanding of primates and human evolution. She is a passionate advocate for empowering individuals and communities to protect and preserve the natural world.
Mrs. Fannie Lou Hamer transformed the struggle for racial justice in America. As a founder of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, she challenged the exclusion of Black voices in the political system and laid the groundwork for the 1965 Voting Rights Act.
Anna Wintour a renowned fashion icon who has led Vogue as editor-in-chief since 1988. A champion for philanthropic causes, she is also the leading architect behind the annual Met Gala fundraiser and chief content officer of Condé Nast.
Hillary Rodham Clinton honored for having "made history many times over decades in public service, including as the first First Lady elected to the United States Senate," the White House release said."After serving as Secretary of State, she became the first woman nominated for president by a major United States political party," the statement added.
And she was right, I add.
Fannie Lou has always been a favorite of mine. A little bit about her life. She was a truly amazing woman!
